Making copies of data is one of those conceptually straightforward tasks that’s difficult to implement in practice because of numerous requirements they need to satisfy. Today, backup needs to meet these challenges:

Backups need to be fast.
There’s little downtime in today’s business. That means there’s little time available to even generate the backups.

There’s so much data to back up.
Data collection grows exponentially every year, and so does the need for backup storage. Reusing old media can cause compliance concerns and increase the risk of data loss. In addition, the scale of the data makes it hard to complete backups within the little time available.

Backups don’t happen often enough.
Traditional end-of-day backups mean that an outage causes the loss of all intra-day processing. For many organizations, that much data loss won’t satisfy recovery objectives.

Backups need to be protected.
Backed up data that can’t be found or backed up data on damaged media is as bad as not having a backup at all. Backed up data that’s stolen or tampered with is worse.

Backups need to be accessible.
If you’ve got a single copy of a backup and it’s stored in a data center that’s temporarily inaccessible, you don’t really have a backup of your data at all.

Recovery needs to be fast and flexible.
Backups serve their purpose when they’re restored. That recovery needs to be rapid, to minimize downtime. It needs to be flexible; you don’t want to waste time restoring more data than needed. The process needs to be simple, as it’s rarely executed and teams aren’t used to performing those tasks.

How CrackStation Works

CrackStation uses massive pre-computed lookup tables to crack password hashes. These tables store a mapping between the hash of a password, and the correct password for that hash. The hash values are indexed so that it is possible to quickly search the database for a given hash. If the hash is present in the database, the password can be recovered in a fraction of a second. This only works for "unsalted" hashes. For information on password hashing systems that are not vulnerable to pre-computed lookup tables, see our hashing security page. Crackstation's lookup tables were created by extracting every word from the Wikipedia databases and adding with every password list we could find. We also applied intelligent word mangling (brute force hybrid) to our wordlists to make them much more effective.
